Back in 2001, in the height of the Harry Potter mania, a young nephew of mine was a huge fan of both the books and the movies.
I came across these coins that the Pobjoy mint on the Isle of Man were minting to commemorate the character. Unlike other ‘play’ Potter coins being produced at the time, I thought it was pretty special that these coins are real money with actual real value. I thought it would be cool to explain to my nephew that he could walk into a shop in the UK someday and pay for his bar of chocolate with a Harry Potter crown!
So I bought him one as a present. And bought a spare one too.
It’s the spare one, below, that I found in the back of a drawer recently.
